ART SURVIVAL: How to Navigate the Art World as an Independent Artist

Workshop for media artists with curator Kathy Rae Huffman

This USArtBerlin workshop lead by Berlin-based American curator Kathy Rae Huffman is designed as a lab for a small group of media artists, who will work together to develop a critical, positive perspective on the Berlin media art scene.

Kathy Rae Huffman is a freelance curator, writer, networker based in Berlin since 2008. Lead curator for “Exchangeand Evolution: Worldwide Video Long Beach, 1974-1999,” for the Long Beach Museum of Art (October 2011- February 2012), the exhibition and research was supported by the Getty Research Institute as part of Pacific Standard Time. She was international curator for ISEA2009, Belfast; and was project curator and touring coordinator for ‘Transitland: Video art from Central and Eastern Europe 1980-2009′. Huffman held curatorial posts at the Long Beach Museum of Art (1980-1984), The ICA, Boston (1984-1991), and Cornerhouse, Manchester, UK (2002-2008). She was appointed professor of electronic art at Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY (1998-2000). Huffman’s independent research is focused around issues of female environments in the Internet, the history and development of media art, and artists’ television. She co-founded the international online community for women media artists FACES: Gender/Technology/Art (with Diana McCarty and Valie Djordjevic) in 1997.

Dr. Rhee`s Kimtschi Shop

Dr. Rhee`s Kimtschi Shop posing as an mercantile venture, seeks to investigate cultural consumption, explore how authentic culture is evaluated, and question the function of a national treasure, all through food, bartering, and audience assessment. Dr. Rhee’s Kimtschi Shop seeks to dismantle outdated and essentialist notions of a fixed cultural identity – while celebrating cultural tolerance and engaging conversations of multiculturalism in Berlin.

Dr. Rhee Kimtschi Shop took place at Das Gift in Berlin from 19 – 25 Nov. 2005 and was an interactive work in which audience members were invited to trade a national treasure from their own country or culture, for Kimtschi, a nationa treasure from Korea.

An diesem Abend wird das niederländische Duo Il Sussurro mit Amanda Markwick an der Traversflöte und Gerard van Vuuren am Clavichord Werke von Joseph Haydn und Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart darbieten. Es erklingen unter anderem von Haydn ein Trio in D-Dur und von Mozart die Sonate F-Dur KV 376 und ein Thema und 5 Variationen aus der Sonate d-Moll KV 377. Il Sussurro stammt aus dem italienischen und bedeutet „das Flüstern“. Der Name charakterisiert den Klang der Traversflöte und des Clavichords – leise und expressiv. Eintritt: 22,00 Euro – inkl. Begrüßungssekt

USArt Berlin Forum

Ever worry about all those things posted online that are searchable? Well, we have created an Online Forum that is completely private with exception of a few sections for USArtBerlin members to post their services such as lessons and workshops to the Berlin public. This is merely a subsection of the main website but it is designed to allow the community of American Artists of all media to collaborate, find resources such as grants, network, and discuss issues unique to their community.

The Yahoo List will be ending and the new community is taking form. This opportunity will allow American Citizens of the arts based in Berlin to find support and community where earlier there has been a smattering of various networks. Unique aspects of the forum include a bartering area for members along with advertising your studio or apartment for rent to the community alone. All members forums are not searchable so Google (and others) will not see your conversations, info or media.
